Muse: The AI with which Microsoft seeks to revolutionize video games

In February 2025, Microsoft unveiled Muse, an AI (artificial intelligence) model it developed in collaboration with Ninja Theory, a studio part of Xbox Game Studios. This new generative AI model is designed to develop video games and transform them from what we know to how they could evolve.

But what is Muse? Have you heard of this model? How could it change the world of video games? This is what I want to talk to you about next. Shall we get to it?

What is Muse

How Artificial Intelligence Works Today.

The first thing you need to know about Muse is that we are dealing with an artificial intelligence model. Its objective is tohelp game programmers generate graphics and controller actions. And how does it do this? As they've explained, it involves using game sequences to generate their own content and experiment with new developments.

You see, Muse He was trained for over seven years through anonymous matches using a multiplayer video game called Bleeding Edge. In total, they accumulated more than 500,000 game sessions, as well as more than 100,000 billion images. All of this is part of their database, which they've dubbed the "7 Maps dataset."

This makes a big difference. Unlike other artificial intelligences, which have learned from predefined rules and limited data (i.e., based on more structural knowledge), Muse was able to analyze and learn from different game sessions more easily.

Specifically, the developers evaluated Muse on three key aspects:

  • Its consistency, in the sense that it has the ability to generate sequences that are in line with the dynamics of the game itself, without deviating from or changing the course of the video game.
  • Diversity, because it's capable of creating variations with the same starting point. But it also gives the player the opportunity to let the game evolve according to their style of play.
  • Perseverance, in the ability to incorporate and maintain user modifications, or even add new elements to the game environment.

All of this has already been tested using an application called WHAM Demonstrator. The developers themselves have used this tool to interact with the AI and see how the development changes, and even influence it.

In this way, Muse It can distinguish and understand the game world, both physically and analyze and predict the different reactions of users to certain actions. In other words, it understands the game at hand and is able to develop a sequence of play tailored to each player, making the game adapt to their gameplay.

What does it mean for Muse to exist?

As we mentioned at the beginning, Muse is already here, starting in February 2025, and that means the video game industry, like other industries impacted by artificial intelligence, is going to change. A lot.

For starters, Muse could be capable of adapting old console titles to new platforms and improve its graphics and story to revive those classics that can now only be played on an older console. This would mean reviving old titles and giving them a new lease on life.

But that's not all. Muse not only serves to improve the old, but it is also able to help designers create and test new gaming experiences. This way, they don't have to waste time programming them from scratch, or slowing down their work.

For example, instead of having to program something to test it, you would use Muse to give you instructions on the experiment you want to perform. It would create it, and you wouldn't have to spend time on that task; instead, you could focus on the more creative side.

Workflow optimization, related to the above, would be a reality, because Muse could be used for certain tasks leaving those that are more specific and more creative to the developers. Furthermore, it would be a great ally when it comes to identifying or correcting errors, designing levels, or generating actions that, a priori, may not be thought of at first.

Is Muse taking away jobs from many developers and programmers?

game

This question isn't easy to answer. But, as is already the case in other sectors, it's true that Muse could endanger jobs. Still, it's important to keep in mind that this is a relatively new AI, and it can't yet be said to be 100% practical. The model still needs to be tested and evolved before it's truly useful and can replace human work.

Also, do not forget that This tool is expensive and requires large volumes of data. to function properly. This would make it impossible for small studios to access it.

Over time we'll see if it's really a useful application for the video game industry. For now, like everything, it's just starting out and like ChatGPT, has bugs and errors. So it will still take years to fully develop and mature to be 100% viable for use.

In fact, Microsoft itself warns that Muse is still in development, although it sees considerable potential in it. Not only to help developers with their work, but also so they can create better video games for players. That's why the company wants to open up Muse and WHAM Demonstrator to developers and users who want to experiment. The goal is to improve the tool through all of these interactions.

This could significantly improve the tool, providing it with different lifespans and new ways of developing video games. It could even allow for testing, which will allow it to evolve even more rapidly. But at the creative level, humans will still be needed to give video games their heart.

Would you dare to try Muse?
